The Mayor

The Mayor is responsible for the organization of the local government, including the functions of the Giunta, or Mayor’s Council.
The Mayor is elected by citizens every 5 years.
The measures and decisions taken by the Mayor are known as ordinanze (ordinances) and usually contain either a positive duty (a commando, or command) or a negative duty (a divieto, or prohibition).

The current mayor

Since 25 June 2009 the mayor of Florence is Matteo Renzi, born in Florence on 11 January 1975.

After attending the well-known liceo classico Dante (high school) in Florence, Renzi graduated in 1999 with a degree in law with a thesis entitled 'Firenze 1951-1956: la prima esperienza di Giorgio La Pira Sindaco di Firenze' – not insignificantly a thesis about the first years of one of the city’s greatest mayors. Before becoming the mayor of Florence he was the President of the Province of Florence (2004-2009).

Matteo Renzi believes that communication is an essential part of politics. This website is just one small part of his dedication to the dialogue with citizens, friends and supporters through digital means. Famous for his updates on facebook and twitter, where he informs his followers what he’s doing every day, he sends out weekly e-news and writes his own blog posts.
